Primary Education

Education in the Marshall Islands, that form part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands is compulsory for the first 8 years and this phase is generally complete by age 14. The first 6 of these take place at primary schools. Although foreign funded many of the facilities have begun falling into neglect.

Middle Education

The ministry of education has embarked on programs to improve education standards by providing textbooks and bolstering the quality of the teachers. At the end of the 8th grade, pupils wishing to go on to secondary school must pass a high school entrance examination.

Secondary Education

There are just 2 secondary schools on the Marshall Islands, which is sufficient for the purposes of a community where so many are content to continue with their traditional way of life, and secondary education is not compulsory either. Some students do persist though, and qualify to study further.

Vocational Education

Vocational training and continuing education courses are available at the College of the Marshall Islands.

Tertiary Education

Marshall Islands EducationThe College of the Marshall Islands is the island nation’s only place for post-secondary education too. Today, it serves a wide range of students pursing associate degrees in nursing, education, liberal arts, business, architecture, and engineering.

The College continues to bolster the quality of its education systems, while its lecturers dream of a future in which their students did not have to go overseas to study further, often never return home.
